Here's another view of the pastoral, or at least the agrarian. Who has it right, Hopkins or Toomer? Toomer's clause, "as a thing that's done," strikes me as especially chilling and worthy of discussion.

Robert Jones' biographical sketch of Toomer is fascinating. Next time someone tells me, "Get a life," maybe I'll consider it more seriously.

ReplyDeleteDo people ever complain when you take their photo (the candid shots you have)? I had my first in my face "YOU *ITCH, YOU TOOK MY DOG'S PHOTO AND THAT IS AGAINST THE LAW, INVASION OF PRIVACY" screamer at the city dog park yesterday. She was ready to break both my camera and my knees. It shocked me, esp. since it was dog photos (mostly my dogs) and not people. But anyway, have you ever had that?

ReplyDeleteI used to worry about it more, and I still try to be discreet and/or depend on the zoom. But as I understand it, the "expectation of privacy" vanishes pretty much the minute you walk out the door. Of course that doesn't prevent the snapee from getting nasty.
Of course, depending on the zoom sometimes makes me feel like a stalker . . .

ReplyDeleteBut Brenda, I've heard others with similarly nasty experiences. There's a legal doc I'll send to you once I find it that proves you're perfectly within your rights. Other photogs just pass this on to (horrible or mistaken) person. I don't know what's up with those folks -- witness protection?
